A GERMAN YOUTH chronicles the political radicalization of some German youth in the late 1960s that gave birth to the Red Army Faction (RAF), a German revolutionary terrorist group as well as the images generated by this story. The film is entirely produced by editing preexisting visual and sound archives and aims to question viewers on the significance of this revolutionary movement during its time, as well as its resonance for today’s society.

World Premiere: Opening Film of Berlinale Panorama 2015

In his award-winning short films Jean-Gabriel Périot made elaborate use of archive footage in order to create incisive commentaries on violence and history. With “Une jeunesse allemande” he shows his view of the Federal Republic of Germany in the RAF era and mechanisms of radicalization – without any additional commentary and with archive material only.
